Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9
- Verse 4: Moses chisels out two stone tablets to replace the ones he shattered and climbs Mount Sinai as commanded.
- Verse 5: The Lord descends in a cloud and proclaims His name.
- Verses 6-7 provides one of the most foundational declarations of God’s character in the Old Testament. God introduces Himself as merciful, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. It serves as a beautiful pivot from judgment to restoration.
- Verse 8: Overcome by this revelation, Moses quickly bows to the ground and worships
Daniel 3:52-56
Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, commands everyone to worship his statue but Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who are exiled to Babylon and serve in the court not only refuse but boldly sing praises to Yahweh. They are cast in to the furnace, where King Nebuchadnezzar orders a sevenfold increase in the temperature of the furnace but Yahweh protects the three men
This is part of the Prayer of Azariah or the Song of the Three Young Men is a beautiful hymn of praise sung from the midst of the fiery furnace.
- Verse 52: A blessing of God’s glorious and exalted name, praising his righteousness and ultimate rule.
- Verse 53: Focuses on God's holiness and supremacy, traditionally responded to with the refrain: "Glory and praise to him forever."
- Verse 54-55: Praises the depths of God’s knowledge and his majesty on his heavenly throne.
- Verse 56: Extols God's dominion across the cosmos, calling all of creation to bless him.
2 Corinthians 13:11-13
Today's reading comprises the conclusion of Paul’s letter, with these three verses recapping Paul's overarching message to the Corinthians.
(1) the patterns of thinking, believing, feeling, and behaving as a community of God; and
(2) the divine resources which can help us live as a community of God
Paul’s closing in 2 Corinthians is not simply an appeal for the church to get along, it is an exhortation for the Corinthians to be the new creation that the Spirit is equipping them to be.
The blessing of 13:13, is now habitually used at the end of mass to send the faithful out to become God’s messenger to the people in the world
- The grace of Christ refers to salvation
- The love of God refers to the undeserved grace by which we receive this grace
- The fellowship of the Holy Spirit allows the faithful to live as a community of God
John 3:16-18
This passage, which is part of a larger conversation between Jesus and a religious leader named Nicodemus, contains the most famous explanation of the Gospel
John 3:16 is perhaps the most quoted scripture passage
God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.
but it must be understood in the context of John 3:17
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him
To “believe” is not simply a mental exercise of acceptance, but “an all-embracing relationship, an attitude of love and trust in God.” Nicodemus was devout but he did not have the trust in God therefore Jesus tells him, “If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?” (John 3:12)
